Frequently Asked Questions
What is the recruiting timeline for volleyball players?
The timeline varies by age group, but the "active" phase generally begins in the sophomore year. Recruiting rules dictate when college coaches can initiate contact (typically June 15 after sophomore year), though players should begin building their profiles and filming highlights as early as freshman year.
How do I start the recruiting process with Top Select?
Athletes should first complete their recruiting profile on our designated platform and schedule an initial consultation with the recruiting coordinator. This allows the staff to assess the player’s goals, academic standing, and athletic level to create a targeted list of schools.
What role does the club play in contacting college coaches?
The recruiting coordinator and coaching staff act as advocates, reaching out to college programs to provide assessments and verify player information. While the club facilitates these connections, the PLAYER is responsible for maintaining direct communication and following up with coaches.
Should athletes have a highlight reel?
Yes! A highlight reel is often a college coach's first introduction to an athlete. Since recruiters cannot attend every court at every tournament, a concise, high quality video acts as a digital resume that proves a player can compete at the next level. It serves to "peak interest" and encourages coaches to come watch the athlete perform in person.
What is a "Target School List"?
A Target School List is a curated group of 15–30 colleges that align with a player’s athletic ability, academic interests, and geographic preferences. This list is fluid and will be refined as the player moves through the recruiting cycle.
Are there specific camps or showcases athletes should attend?
The recruiting coordinator will recommend specific college-run camps or "ID clinics" based on the player’s target list. These are often more effective for exposure than large, generic showcases because they provide direct interaction with specific coaching staffs.
What are the differences between NCAA, NAIA, and JUCO?
NCAA
(National Collegiate Athletic Association)
The NCAA is divided into three divisions:
- Division I: Highest level of competition and visibility. Offers full athletic scholarships.
- Division II: Balanced approach between athletics and academics. Offers partial "equivalency" scholarships (scholarship money can be split among players).
- Division III: Focuses on the student-athlete experience. No athletic scholarships are offered, but many players receive significant academic or need-based financial aid.
NAIA
(National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)
The NCAA is divided into three divisions:
- Division I: Highest level of competition and visibility. Offers full athletic scholarships.
- Division II: Balanced approach between athletics and academics. Offers partial "equivalency" scholarships (scholarship money can be split among players).
- Division III: Focuses on the student-athlete experience. No athletic scholarships are offered, but many players receive significant academic or need-based financial aid.
JUCO
(Junior College / NJCAA)
Junior colleges offer two-year programs that serve as an excellent stepping stone for many athletes.
- Transfer Pathway: Many players choose the JUCO route to improve their grades or refine their skills before "bouncing back" to a four-year NCAA or NAIA university.
- Scholarships: NJCAA Division I and II schools can offer athletic scholarships, often covering tuition and housing.
- Immediate Impact: Freshmen are often expected to contribute immediately, providing valuable game-time experience that they might not get right away at a large university.
